America’s Indestructible Thanksgiving

America’s Thanksgiving Tradition: A Timeless Memorial for all People                      ~ by Patrick J. Zuniga  c. 2009

Do you know what actually happened in 1621? Do people realize what these honored Pilgrims were really like?

Perpetrators who propose questions of this nature usually come packaged in partisan slant a la’mode or a salacious tabloid parfait. One cannot help but detect the eerie soap opera undertones betraying a clear iconoclastic agenda. Many modern renditions of our beloved first Thanksgiving are not complementary. Most are spurious. Other perspectives simply make issues out of non issues. Research microscopes have been dusted off and calibrated for the purpose of focusing entirely on the common flaws of our founding fathers and mothers while ignoring their uncommon virtues. Each passing season has seen a little more denigration of the good and important things surrounding Plymouth Plantation’s inimitable experience, and a little more magnification of their mistakes. Now what was it that our beloved sixteenth President used to say? “If you look for the bad in people expecting to find it, you surely will.”

Consequently, a treasured episode in American history has been under sporadic sniper shots of revisionism. In spite of all this diabolical working, the gem of a triumphant human saga, which gave us an enduring tradition, still shines on. Here is a concise recounting of the Pilgrim’s heart touching Thanksgiving story…

Separatists in Scrooby, England desired a place where they could live and practice their religious persuasion without harassment from the politically correct Anglican Church. A strong passion for liberty initially placed them in Dutch Holland, circa 1609. An eleven year stay at Leyden, coupled with much prayer, eventually motivated the Christian sect to set sail for Northern Virginia. Their Mayflower journey and first months in America witnessed both hardships and miracles – or a series of auspicious coincidences if you prefer. Details of the persecuted groups trials and triumphs are preserved in William Bradford’s journal. It should be noted that many passengers on this voyage were not Separatists.

After a stormy transatlantic crossing – which fortuitously (or allegedly) blew them off course – captain Christopher Jones anchored the Mayflower in Provincetown Harbor (November of 1620). The company deliberated their situation and decided they would stay where Providence led them rather than head south for the ship’s licensed destination. Legal and social considerations prompted leaders of this civic body to compose and ratify a unique rule of government – The Mayflower Compact. An expeditionary force was then quickly launched in search of a land-based dwelling site. Minor skirmishes with indigenous tribes ensued; quite possibly a native reaction because those very natives recalled Hunt’s treachery (a sea captain who previously deceived and enslaved local inhabitants ). Probably this angry melee occurred simply because the fact finding mission violated native property and food storage. Either way, the offended denizens could not be blamed for attacking the party.

Across the bay a garrison was constructed at Plymouth. Unforeseen tragedy and illness hit hard during that first winter. (1)  Death tolls saw the struggling community cut by almost half. Yet, fortune smiled on the weary band of pioneers once again when Governor Bradford’s colony enjoyed the blessings of a desperately needed respite the following spring and summer. An ingathering feast was joyfully arranged in late 1621 per his memoirs. King Massasoit and the people of the Wampanoag, who earlier befriended and secured a peace treaty with the settlers, were welcomed, if not specifically invited.

... our harvest being gotten in, our governour sent foure men on fowling, that so we might after a speciall manner rejoyce together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labours ; they foure in one day killed as much fowle, as with a little helpe beside, served the Company almost a weeke, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Armes, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoyt, with some ninetie men, whom for three dayes we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deere, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governour, and upon the Captaine and others.  And although it be not always so plentifull, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so farre from want,  that we often wish you partakers of our plentie.  ~ Edward Winslow; Mourt’s Relation

Although the event, as recorded in this 17th century journal, was not called an official thanksgiving feast unto God, the phrase, “…yet by the goodness of God we are so far from want…” speaks interpretive volumes of the colony’s thankfulness to Almighty God. And it cannot be disputed that Mourt’s Relation declares an appreciation for the blossoming friendship which started flourishing between the Pilgrims, Massasoit, and the Wampanoag.

“…Bradford and Massasoit were extraordinary leaders. Their political wisdom, prudence and restraint, allowed them keep in focus principles that enabled the Pilgrims and Wampanoag to live peacefully for decades. The appearance of Samoset and Squanto was fortunate, but the leadership of Bradford and Massasoit was providential.”  ~ Robert Jennings Heinsohn

Plymouth colony prospered in the unfolding years. We read in Bradford’s Journal Of Plymouth’s Plantation “In the meantime it pleased the Lord to give the plantation peace and health and contented minds, and so to blese ther labours, as they had corne sufficient…”

William Bradford’s congregation gradually diffused into the flood streams of overwhelming immigrants flowing in from England and Europe. But what his tiny plantation accomplished in the way of inspiring others toward a life of freedom was, and still is, phenomenal. A literal fulfillment, in a cultural sense, of the mustard seed parable written in the gospel of Mark.

Cooperation and friendship, on both sides, were important ingredients kneaded into the successful gala of 1621. Most Americans over time have celebrated this affair because it represents the ongoing freedoms and bounties we enjoy in friendship with one another. Thanksgiving has thus become an iconic institution personifying a universal desire to live a peaceful, free, and abundant community life.

U.S. citizens, patriots, and non biased historians who cherish their country’s national heritage will not stand by and watch the first symbolic thanksgiving get muddled by fault finders. Nor will they shrink from the task of challenging any disgruntled sentiments which caste Mayflower’s Separatists into the same mix as other greedy European fortune hunters. Notwithstanding any actual failings, there is something wonderful in Plymouth’s original narrative; something ineffably deep within the rough of these ordinary folks that only poetry and the most incisive prose can uncover. Without the leadership of William Bradford and William Brewster, the dedication of Cape Cod’s maidens and matrons, the contribution of Massasoit, and diverse persons of like caliber throughout the American legacy, there would not be a United States of America.

Cynical sound bites assaulting the brave pilgrims will undoubtedly continue from certain quarters, but they will never change anything. Because the victorious epic of Plymouth is written in stone. And as long as We the People and people everywhere – choose thankfulness, the indestructible tradition of commemorating America’s first memorable Thanksgiving will stand firm throughout all generations.

“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise…”  ~ Psalm 100:4

(1)  Legends of severe winter weather descending upon the Pilgrim’s at their first landing in Plymouth have been erroneously interpolated in many stories of the historical epic. By most reliable accounts and biographies, the weather was actually quite mild in New England’s winter of 1620-21 (see appendix of: The Pilgrim Republic by John Abbot Goodwin), and the actual ‘severity’ had to do with death tolls rising from sickness. Later winters were extremely severe; in some instances much of the harbor was frozen over. Apparently these later harsh climate conditions got mixed into the re-telling narrative of the first Pilgrim’s winter of 1620-21.

America’s True Judeo-Christian Heritage

                                                           -by Patrick J. Zuniga

Public Domain: Courtesy of Library of Congress

Judeo-Christian: A characterization of a person, a group of people, or a nation who predominantly embrace basic Old and New Testament biblical teachings and values as the foremost standard, compass, or guide in their private behaviors, diverse relationships, and civic order; regardless of whether such an embrace fully agrees with, or does not fully agree with, certain aspects and specific doctrines of religious orthodoxy.

What do advocates of America’s religious heritage mean by the statement: America is a Judeo-Christian Nation. And what do they hope to achieve by embracing such a claim? Certainly not a theocracy as practiced in Muslim countries, or a hegemony of ecclesiastical dominion and control as it existed over Europe throughout the Middle Ages. Nor do they suggest the rigid Protestantism of Cromwell’s England, or the hypocrisy and doctrinal error prevalent among radical identity movements promoting racial distinctions, theological superiority, power cultism, and/or secret societies. A true Judeo-Christian nation must have a convincing measure of faith in the bible and Christ. There must be a desire for universal biblical teachings and Christian character at its’ inception, and during its subsequent development, if it is to be genuinely Christian. When a country, any country, has a general consensus among the constituency of its people – with all their human faults and failings – who claim the Christian creed rooted in old and new testament origins as their religious base; seek to faithfully inculcate within their civic body those same traditions and beliefs; and bequeath to future generations those traditions, then said nation can rightfully be called Judeo-Christian or Christian. Is this true of America?

As one ponders the interwoven multi-cultural diversity in America today inherited from ancient civilizations, viz, indigenous natives, Africa, Roman and Grecian antiquity, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the Orient, it is understandable how the idea of a ‘Christian’ Nation classification will be quickly challenged. Especially since many of these past and present cultures are often in conflict theologically and philosophically with core Christian doctrine. Considering further how the U.S. government is a neutral entity and represented by the eagle (Caesar) and not the dove (the Church), it becomes even more difficult seeing America as a ‘religiously’ Christian Nation.

Nevertheless, even with this diverse cultured blend, and with the elected governing powers constitutionally forbidden toward favoring any particular religious persuasion, America in heart and essence always has been, and is, a democratic republic established by a predominance of Judeo-Christian people whose chief desire has been the enactment of just laws, provide an atmosphere of freedom for one and all, transmit the Christian faith and biblical values to their offspring through established churches, religious institutions, and the public school system – i.e., in U.S. beginnings and origins.

Judiciously reviewing the opinion of the Illinois supreme court ruling of 1883 ( ruling opinion and commentary notes are in the ‘Notes’ section) there is an abundance of evidence supporting this claim. The United States in fact, in experience, in history, and in substantial quantity, is a nation of multitudes united by a general Christian philosophical heritage, which also upholds the essential principles of Holy Scripture, and therefore can claim both a virtual and practicing Judeo-Christian Nation status by reason of this prevailing heritage.

In 1620 the Pilgrims of Plymouth Bay dedicated the land, themselves, and their descendants in the Christian Savior’s name. On Cape Henry, Va. similar ceremonies were inaugurated thirteen years before the Mayflower pact. And William Penn introduced his “Holy Experiment” (golden rule society) – a tiny colony named Philadelphia, founded in the latter part of the 17th century. Obviously these dedications by and of themselves mean little unless they are lived out in good faith and then followed up by their progeny. And they were.

Despite the moral shortcomings inbred in all people groups, adherence to the Judeo-Christian lifestyle by successive generations flourished in the new continent well into the 18th century and beyond. (1) When the constitution was framed and became functional law it was formed and established respecting many scruples and moorings of colonial Christian America; and their diligent groping for checks and balances resulted in the 1st amendment which says: “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of any religion…”. That proviso is very clear and wise; for at one in the same time it protects non-Christians with a legal framework in their philosophical pursuits, and secures universally cherished Christian beliefs and differing viewpoints by “not prohibit(ing) the free exercise thereof.” The 1st amendment has in effect allowed this foundational  and traditional Faith among America’s constituency a secure prosperity; not primarily through political or temporal power, but rather through principles of freedom and grace – Christianity’s true medium for growth.

America is not, and never was meant to be, a ‘controlling’ secular republic -as atheist, secularists, et al, push – which invites all religions free participation, and the majority religion is coincidentally Christianity. In other words, a confederacy of secularists and non-Christians did not get together back in the 18th century and say, “Let us establish a free secular republic among the former English American colonies. And let any religion practice openly therein, but this republic will ever remain a pure secular state.” If this were indeed true the burden of proof is on those who would claim America’s republic was originally intended by her founders as a dominating secular nation (people), and then progressed in that irreligious strain for the sake of non-religious freedoms. Not true. As a matter of polling accuracy more than 90% + of America’s indigenous colonial population and her founders – although holding differing views – were fervently orthodox in Christian doctrine by the time of the Revolution, with a sprinkling of Deist, unorthodox leanings, and other religious persuasions in the mix. And it was in such a God fearing religious societal context wherein this national multitude developed, matured, and eventually birthed the Constitution of the United States of America.

Therefore, the doctrine of “Separation of Church and State,” which has gradually metastasized into an anti-Christian bias, has been unconstitutional in many of its influential court rulings.  Numerous judgments passed down from the bench adjudicating in this specific venue have been a twisted rendering of the founding fathers original intent that, “Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of any religion.” (eg. Permitting a privately funded nativity scene in the town Commons hardly constitutes the legal establishment of a particular religion.)  (2)

Neither is America (and never was) a deliberate amalgamation of many religions simply because the constitution allows all groups a practicing freedom under the umbrella of its’ democratic principles. Notwithstanding the many other religious philosophies pouring in from around the world over the decades, promoting their own identity agendas, America is much more overwhelmingly Judeo-Christian in reputation and character. So with all due respect toward the wholesome endowments made by non-Christian institutions, movements, organizations, and philosophies, it can be honestly stated: Without the auspices of a strong Judeo-Christian faith and influence, America – a truly free America as we know it today and someday more perfectly so – would not exist. Arrogant? No, just wonderfully true. Simply because the heart and substance of a true Christian faith when authentically practiced will always produce genuine freedom in every area of personal and social life.

Years into the expansion of our unique E Pluribus Unum various aspects of canon law led the way as a faithful guide for her legal rulings and liberties. Scriptural wisdom(s), including the gospels, were taught in most state public school systems without contest up until the 1960’s; and are still academically welcomed by millions of students outside these common educational institutions in home schools, Sunday schools, parochial communities, and private campuses. Without question the warp and woof of America’s spirituality has always been, and still is, predominantly Judeo-Christian.

In view of this undeniable truth when Americans say “God Bless America,” or “One Nation Under God,” what exactly are they saying? Who is this God? He is obviously not some impersonal god of politically correct modernism, or the deity of a religious-credo which contradicts the Christian faith. He is clearly the God of scripture, the God of Israel, the God of the apostles, the God of the Church, the God of our founding fathers, the Creator of all things, Who calls Himself authoritatively Lord Almighty God. This profession then, ‘One Nation Under God’, is the unashamed statement of faith by America’s Judeo-Christian citizenry and anyone who worships that One in the same Father God.

A number of dissenting positions on this issue will concede that America at one time was in some socio-religious degree a flawed Christian population but not an officially established entity as such.

There is no argument that American citizens have been flawed like any other national citizenry, and that demographics in just about every area of sociological life have morphed in the U.S. over the past one hundred plus years, especially in the domain of religion. The statistics of Christian Americans per capita is not anywhere near the 90% level of the 18th century. Add an increasing crime rate, immorality, and a host of other sins the idea or claim of a Christian nation is diminished. And as far as being officially Christian, America’s motto or constitutional decree has never been One Nation Under the Christian Faith. Yet, who we are today, “One Nation Under God,” is who we were in the beginning. Roots determine the whole tree in all its growth and development, irrespective of flaws or harmful intrusions. And by no means do true believers in Christ call anything without a Christian label as a harmful intrusion, for many cultures and religions have contributed good and honorable things, enriching the American experience. But rather we specifically mark those destructive elements which are universally recognized as harmful, or any unholy practice unequivocally condemned by the God of scripture.

Sadly, or tragically, many iniquities have cropped up in unfolding generations that have infected American society with detrimental consequences: injustices toward the poor and needy; wrongs committed against Native and African Americans; crime organizations; substance abuse; sexual immorality; and an abortion industry fueled by greed are a few examples. Aberrations like these have wrought unavoidable natural ills and have also brought in their wake a terrible chastening by Almighty God – for He is just.

All of this being what it is America still has a substantial amount of Christians, Christian heritage, Christian values, and Christian influence which convict her of being a Christian culture in Heritage and development. Or better said:  A nation whose spiritual/religious infrastructure, past and present, though very much criticized, challenged, and assaulted by detractors was and is more abundantly Judeo-Christian than any other credo. In spite of her many dismal realities, the United States has not ceased being anything less than a Nation called by the grace of God to fulfill the biblical mandate of freedom, good works, and good news among its’ inhabitants; and be at peace with all cultures and nations which are at peace with this mandate.

A statement of Heritage faith:

We The People of the universal Judeo-Christian faith believe that these United States of America were established by the God of Holy Scripture to provide first and foremost a place of freedom and security for those who worship Him within any institutional, or by any free, expressive form; to constitute a nation of life, liberty, and well-being for all who will be at peace with this purpose and with one another, regardless of religious or non religious philosophy. And that His Mighty Hand will preserve America’s life, liberty, religious heritage, and unique standing in the world by powerful judgements and mercies poured out.

Notes:

(1) Colonial Christian America had a good sense of its spiritual and legal responsibilities in connection with its christian ‘scruples and moorings’. Leaders of the colonies, by these inherited traits, succeeded in giving birth to an enduring constitution, and a freedom based republic; even though many serious imperfections had yet to be overcome. The slavery issue was one, and there were numerous such wrongs. However, these historical evils were not a fatal blight upon colonial Christian America’s religious veracity. All civilizations and cultures in every epoch have had their own moral issues and outrages. This merely bespeaks of the sad condition of humanity over all. Colonial America was not exempt from mankind’s good and evil dilemma. America in the past definitely needed, and still needs, God’s grace.

(2) Due to Christian action organizations, some of these judgments have been modified in the Supreme Court, viz,  ‘The Equal Access Act’. However, more changes and reversals are sure to be forthcoming as America’s heritage advocates continue to combine prayer and constitutional action.

Illinois Supreme Court Opinion:

Our government is unlike the British government, as that government combines the ecclesiastical and secular powers. Its constitution is based upon the union of church and State, and it claims and exercises the power to enforce the faith and doctrines of the established church, by statutes imposing penalties for failing to perform religious duties and requirements, and compelling all to contribute support to the State church; on the contrary, however, a total severance of church and State is one of the great controlling foundation principles of our system of government. (3) The spiritual welfare of our people is left entirely to the hierarchy of the various churches. The government protects all alike in their religious beliefs and unbeliefs. It is no part of the function of our government to prescribe and enforce religious tenets. The great purpose of the formation of our system of government is to protect the people in the enjoyment of their temporal and spiritual rights, and to prohibit crime, vice and wrong to any portion of the community, and to pass and enforce laws for the promotion of the temporal interests of the people, and, as far as possible, secure their temporal welfare and happiness. Although it is no part of the functions of our system of government to propagate religion, and to enforce its tenets, when the great body of the people are Christians, in fact or sentiment, our laws and institutions must necessarily be based upon and embody the teachings of the Redeemer of mankind. It is impossible that it should be otherwise. And in this sense, and to this extent, our civilization and institutions are emphatically Christian, (4) but not for the purpose of compelling men to embrace particular doctrines or creeds of any church, or to support one or another denomination by public burthens, but simply to afford protection to all in the enjoyment of their belief or unbelief. (5) But the State has the unquestioned power to suppress crime, vice and immorality, even if such acts are claimed to be the exercise of religious belief.  ” (6)  ~ Richmond v. Moore, 107 Ill. 429, 1883 WL 10319 (Ill.), 47 Am.Rep. 445 (Ill. 1883).

  • This quote is accurately submitted in context and properly sourced here. At times it has been erroneously attributed with an 1892 U.S. Supreme Court decision which involved Holy Trinity Church, and thereby misapplied by some heritage apologists. Although the above statement is considered merely a nineteenth century State court opinion, a fact which draws contempt from certain quarters in the 21st century by reason of its venue, the insight, nevertheless, given by this particular Justice is quite penetrating. In my estimation it is an excellent guideline for modern court cases addressing Christianity and religion in American civic life and law.

Notes on the Illinois Supreme Court Opinion:

(3) This is obviously made in reference to a constricting legal, and unproductive, binding of the two entities as it is in Great Britain. In this respect, the separation – or ‘ the constitutional freedom and rights’ – of church and state in the U.S.A. is absolute and fervently applauded. But in reading this statement carefully, it doesn’t at all mean that the Church has absolutely no voice or redress in the halls of government, no wisdom to offer its legislature and courts; that the bible may not be used as an instrument of inspiration and counsel by governing officials, or be taught and utilized in public institutions.

(4) A clear point of opinion in this case by the presiding Justice: the propagation of the Christian faith is not the government’s responsibility, nor can it be. The government’s sole duty is to protect the citizenry and secure their constitutional rights. But at the same time it is vividly inferred that so many of America’s customs and laws are based on the tenets of Christianity by reason of her religious roots, and as such these sentiments should not be molested or muzzled by unbelievers, or critics, who would utilize an unlawful manipulation of the “Separation of Church and State” doctrine in court proceedings, i.e., this dominant American creed should, and of a right ought to, be allowed full and free expression in public places (such as public schools and public work sites) and in government halls by governing officials, when such expressions are not deliberate extravaganzas with the intent to harass, incite, or provoke the general public, or infringe upon the privacy of others.

(5) Another clarification how the separation of church and state principle merely delineates (or should merely delineate) that citizens must not be forced to pay for, or participate in, any public display or service of a particular religious persuasion; therefore a tax supported nativity scene, etc., in a public square could clearly be interpreted as unconstitutional, whereas a privately funded presentation in a city commons should be welcomed as freedom of religious expression.

(6)  Re: (4) –  In cases where overt expressions in public settings are criminal or morally odious to the general public, and/or disparaging to the Christian faith, and/or vilifying toward other faiths, either by open pejorative displays, or controversial and questionable demonstrations, the courts would then have power to rule individually in these venues and take full advantage of any and all legal constitutional precedence.

Blessed is the nation whose God is Lord. Psalm 33: 12

“The religious underpinnings of American political and legal institutions have been duly noted by legal scholars, historians, judges, politicians, and clergymen alike. Church polities provided models not only for colonial civil governments but also for the present constitutional system… “  ~ Steven Samson: Christianity in Nineteenth Century American Law

Refuting the claim that George Washington was a Deist.

Brothers: I am glad you have brought three of the Children of your principal Chiefs to be educated with us. I am sure Congress will open the Arms of love to them, and will look upon them as their own Children, and will have them educated accordingly. This is a great mark of your confidence and of your desire to preserve the friendship between the Two Nations to the end of time, and to become One people with your Brethren of the United States. My ears hear with pleasure the other matters you mention. Congress will be glad to hear them too. You do well to wish to learn our arts and ways of life, and above all, the religion of Jesus Christ. These will make you a greater and happier people than you are. Congress will do everything they can to assist you in this wise intention; and to tie the knot of friendship and union so fast, that nothing shall ever be able to loose it.”   ~ John C. Fitzpatrick, editor : Writings of George Washington.. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1932), Vol. XV, p. 55, from his speech to the Delaware Indian Chiefs on May 12, 1779

  • George Washington’s mention of Jesus Christ to the Delaware Chiefs has been skewed by secularists and other critics to appear that he was merely doing a point by point recount of what the Chiefs themselves petitioned, and not in any way giving a personal testimony of his own faith in Jesus Christ. Such an opinion can be easily dismissed. But even if this were the accurate interpretation of his words with the Chiefs, the fact that Washington attended a Church with the Nicene Creed as part of its recited liturgy, prayed privately according to the testimony of close contemporaries, and made positive allusions to a biblical faith (i.e., a God Who intervenes in the affairs of men) in a number of his public speeches and writings, say enough to demolish the misnomer ‘Washington the Deist.’

Deist: Someone who  believes in  a god that created  the universe but has since  remained  indifferent to it, i.e., natural laws run the cosmos without Divine intervention.

Washington could be classified as an unorthodox free thinking Christian, or believer in God, in certain respects, but not even close to being a deist by reason of the term’s fundamental definition. And it should be clear that there is no such animal as a deist Christian, which some have attributed to him. That is like saying an atheist creationist.

Because a number of Founders were unorthodox in their own personal Christian beliefs, and disagreed with each other on various interpretations of biblical texts, etc., does not at all mean they despised basic Judeo-Christian ethics of faith and its inherited value system. It is right to say that a number of Founders were not stereotypical 21st century evangelical Christians. A few of the more iconic Fathers, like Jefferson, were far from being evangelical as we define the term today. But at the same time it is very wrong to quote -mine these pillars of U.S. history and make them appear hostile toward evangelical Christianity (as some do). They were never hostile toward any form of evangelical Christianity. The Founders were indignant toward any religious or non-religious group who sought to establish a judicial/legal hegemony over American citizens as it was in Europe and earlier forms of extreme puritanism; or for that matter, anything resembling latter day Communism, secular socialism, or progressive intolerance.

Neither were Jefferson, Madison, Franklin, et.al., against Christian influence in the chambers of government or civic institutions. America’s Founders, with a leaning toward liberty and free thinking, clearly welcomed the inspiration of biblical guidance in their own lives, and were not opposed to its availability in all public domains.

Wall Builders  and the Myth Accusation

Polemical writers attacking David Barton and Wall Builders https://wallbuilders.com (apologists for America’s Judeo-Christian Heritage and the Founding Fathers who promoted that heritage) are smooth and well oiled. Mostly their polemics center on the hotly debated Separation issue. An issue that must be properly studied and understood in the context of historical, legal, and socio-religious constitutionality. However, much of the time these contentions digress into subtle, or open, attacks on America’s irrefutable Christian heritage. A heritage deeply rooted in scriptural guidance. A heritage, by virtue of an imperishable faith. A faith which has ancient ties to early Christianity. A heritage watered by the blood of patriots and martyrs. And a heritage that has been strongly influenced by a blossoming Reformation. America’s religious moorings are quite obviously then far from a shallow credo or the product of a passing spiritual fad. Whereas David Barton unveils abundant and undeniable documentation to back up his research on the Founding Fathers’ constitutional intent in this area, combining it with more research on the overwhelming religious sentiments of colonial America and future generations, opponents cite anemic sources from a scanty few fathers and philosophers who were agnostic intellectuals, deistic in their persuasion, or in some rare cases atheistic. In addition they use pseudo ‘myth’ tactics when characterizing Barton’s apologetics. These critics cherry pick, bypass, downplay, and skew historical realities in such an artful twist, whereby they construct a seemingly sound, yet very specious, ‘myth’ factor against Wall Builder’s. Most importantly they undermine, either deliberately or carelessly, Wall Builders’ main historical focus, which is not the Separation issue, but to primarily provide a host of educational resources, for all interested Americans, on the unmistakable and firm Judeo-Christian roots which have never ceased nurturing, strengthening, and guiding ‘We The People of the United States’. Consequently then, the root and fruit of America’s religious heritage – ipso facto – is Judeo-Christian. A fact that will naturally result in the earnest desire of a sizable portion of her religious population prefer seeing the governing powers and society at large mature predominantly along these lines. It is a reality set in stone. There is no myth about it!

Therefore, the proper function of this theoretical wall of separation and wall of unity (7) within the bounds of constitutionality – i.e., Government’s legal separation and prohibition from enforcing religious dogma on any American citizen; and the Church’s separation from government interference into her constitutional freedoms ; and the unity of Christian Americans by reason of their common heritage and historical inbred faith – is one of mutual support, not mutual exclusion. It is one of mutual understanding (or it was at one time) where the state is not shunning Christianity but shielding her freedoms and rights, so that the overall Christian (and other harmonious religious) population in turn will reciprocate not with meddling, but rather by inspiring our governing authorities toward a Godly and just rule. Regardless of occasional past church and state conflicts, and a Christian community needing correction from time to time, there has never been anything unconstitutional with this beneficial symbiotic relationship which has existed between the Judeo-Christian Faith and the government of The United States for over one hundred and seventy years ( i.e., up until a few Supreme Court rulings in the mid 20th century; which sadly fueled an erroneous social mind set toward secularization and roiled religious hostility among atheists, et.al. ). The free and independent status between these two entities was never meant to be interpreted as a condition of alienation. For the wise cooperation between the two has been (and must continue to be) the spiritual life, cleansing, healing, well being, and preservation of our nation. This supportive venture then is not to emanate from any ecclesiastical powers, but from the complete free will approval of individual Americans who are constitutionally united as One Nation Under God.

Apparently the persistent secular, or anti Judeo-Christian, activists – who are in the minority – rely on uninformed/uncaring Americans, including those who already have a predetermined bias against Christianity, in order to perpetuate a flawed interpretation of church and state separation (i.e., no religious symbols on public property, no public school prayer, no commencement prayers, no teaching of creation philosophy as an elective course in public schools, etc.). They also push the doctrine of ‘absolute secularization’ as the  Founding Fathers original intent in the ‘establishment clause’ of the Constitution (i.e., Religion – Christianity and the bible –  must remain a private matter and offer no guiding voice whatsoever in the affairs of state or public institutions). A thorough investigation of U.S. history (which Wall Builders have painstakingly undertaken) confidently confirms that such humanistic viewpoints are false extrapolations and misinterpretations of the Founders’ actual intent for this clause. Secularization is clearly a 20th century communist manifesto (see the constitution of the Soviet Union). It is a historical-bio more fitting to an 18th/19th  century European Rationalism that brought with it a flood of religious antipathy, in the wake of a horrid Revolution, which did not bear the fruit of a George Washington type leader and a founding fathers’ democratic republic, but rather the person of Napoleon and a bloody tyrannical empire.

The proofs throughout history are abundantly clear for those who have eyes that see and ears that hear; no matter how much unbelievers mock or argue: To belittle the importance of Almighty God’s place – the giver of human freedom and rights – in all governmental undertakings, or deliberately stifle the practice of ‘wholesome Faith’ and ‘good Religion’ (8) in public expression, will – without fail – invite the gradual bondage of mankind’s worst elements into every aspect of national and civic life.

Final Notes:

(7) This is my personal insight of Jefferson’s metaphor. When placed in context with his many expressions of faith in God, it would then naturally conclude with a caveat that this wall of separation should also be viewed as a unifying wall of faith, in the sense that he acknowledged, with other esteemed fathers, the success of American liberty so much depended upon, and ever will depend upon, God’s protection and blessing. Religious freedom in society and religion’s positive effects, at the same time keeping out religious usurpation and control within the halls of government at large, is what most founders envisioned in the practical outworking of the establishment clause. In my opinion, by reason of the many good things they had to say about wholesome religion, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison definitely called for a firm wall separating Church (religion) and state, yes, but one that would always include mutually benefiting portals of communication between the two entities.

(8)  Descriptive adjectives like ‘wholesome and ‘good’ are imperative when referring to religion. Genuinely concerned U.S. citizens who fear the encroachment of religious abuse upon our freedoms have committed allies in the Christian heritage camp. During occasional periods of Puritan New England; under Henry the VIII’s Church of England; over the centuries of the middle Ages; and in many parts of the world today, corrupt prelates have manipulated and oppressed the masses for their own selfish and delusional gain. Here is where the ‘establishment clause’ must be fine tuned in its interpretation and understanding, and then wisely applied; here is where Thomas Jefferson’s ‘eternal vigilance’ statement must be consistently employed. Religious deception and abuse, of any flavoring, is anathema, and must be kept out of government and society. At the same time, ‘good and ‘true’ religion, is a blessing, and must be allowed to flourish and bear the fruit of well-being and peace in both government and society. Going to the right or left of this truth is where the danger lies. Walking this necessary pathway in wisdom and faith is the  avenue of safety and prosperity for America.

Purpose of the Cross… Power of the Resurrection

By Patrick J Zuniga

The Cross of Jesus Christ is foolishness – in worldly concept. It does not fit a paradigm of strength and power. And it just doesn’t make any logical sense. Cross theology is a losing, simplistic, religious placebo in the thinking of earthbound natural minds. Intellectualism, religious pageantry, and vain carnality cannot be reconciled with such a strange faith. Nothing cuts into mortal man’s pride and self willed determination like trusting in a humiliated Savior for personal redemption. Can a God-man really die on a cross and offer forgiveness for anyone who believes?

There are a number of sincere questions that skeptics ask and doubts they express about Cross atonement. (e.g.) Why the shedding of blood? Why must the sinless Son of God pay for corrupt human sin and folly? What about those who commit abominable sins? Do evil sociopaths get a pass simply because they embrace the Cross? etc… There is no way that a minister or biblical apologist will be able to accommodate the skeptic’s scientific demand for systematic proof that the Cross does what the bible claims. Salvation has a lot more to do with faith than it does with cognition; and the eternal soul more than temporal life. In the final analysis doubters will either reject redemption through Christ outright or patiently pursue an understanding of it with a listening heart. This is of the Lord. He takes great delight in those who seek Him.

Among all known objections there are two which mostly account for ignoring or belittling Cross Salvation: First, sound biblical revelation is despised while alternate origin theories are exalted, i.e., the scriptural canon of Adam and Eve’s Fall (two created individuals with respective and personal identities, who are also the progenitor parents of our human race) is treated more as a mythical allegory rather than as historical fact. Second, stubborn unbelief and pride will not embrace the blessed reality of Jesus Christ’s resurrection (well documented in both sacred and secular histories) which confirms the necessity and power of His saving cross.

Man absolutely needs salvation – individually and corporately. A truth that is evident with each new generation. A Salvation not stemming from intellectualism, technology, money, political idealism, or religious works, but one flowing from Divine grace. A salvation that reveals what condition humankind really is in, and what restored blessedness our race will some day enjoy. This redemptive proviso of saving grace, however, must be and has already been instituted by the Creator. Because Man chose a path of disobedience, i.e., the experiential path of good and evil instead of life – a choice that has birthed more evil than good – he/she must now choose obedience by trusting Almighty God’s pure sacrifice. In so doing all who are faithful will be partakers of the Savior’s resurrected life and glory.

The arrogance of natural man must be crucified on the Cross, or more accurately by faith in the Cross; genuine confidence will then be resurrected in Christ. It must also be stressed that true faith involves a lot more than merely giving mental ascent or by simply attending church. Faith in Jesus Christ will evince a pattern of self-dying and following His example. Cross theology is not really a hard concept to accept and believe on a religious level. Actually living it out in practice is where the wood & metal meets the flesh.

A person’s (or generation’s) choice to cast aside the substitutionary atonement of Jesus Christ does not in one iota make the true purpose of the cross and the power of His resurrection null and void. As we study Romans 3:10-18, Romans 8:1, and supporting verses, it is not the educated; not the religious or ardent church attenders; not priests, pastors, preachers, or missionaries; not conservatives or liberals; not the rich or poor, but genuinely devoted believers – whether they are in or not in those categories just mentioned – who will rejoice at His appearing and sit at His table.

Cross salvation and its redemptive purpose, regardless of how irreconcilable with human rationale and repugnant to unregenerate souls, is of God. The fruit and success of our Lord’s Resurrection has eternally established this truth. If Christ had not risen His painful death would have been nothing more than a tragic end resulting from a bad dream (see 1 Corinthians 15:14). Yet, Christ is risen. And that historical event will culminate into a kingdom of glory and righteousness. A kingdom destined to reign over all the earth and never end (Daniel 7:14).

Resurrection reality validates the saving power and purpose of the cross. Sufferings of the cross give deeper meaning and infinite purpose to the resurrection.

“The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.” Luke 24:7

“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Thessalonians 4:16

Documented evidences on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ:

“It was therefore impossible that they (disciples) could have persisted in affirming the truths they had narrated, had not Jesus actually risen from the dead, and had they not known this fact as certainly as they knew any other fact.” Greenleaf, S. 1874. The Testimony of the Evangelists. New York, NY: 28

Professor Thomas Arnold, former chair of history at Oxford, and author of the famous volumes, History of Rome, was skillfully educated in the study of historical facts. Professor Arnold, stated, “I have been used for many years to study the histories of other times, and to examine and weigh the evidence of those who have written about them, and I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is PROVED BY BETTER AND FULLER EVIDENCE of every sort, than the great sign which God has given us that Christ died and rose again from the dead.”

Vernal Equinox: by Patrick J Zuniga

When winter fades and Orion flees away;
When fecund spring invades and all grieving is past; Oh vernal Sun with healing wings, awake.

Pleiades rise in thy splendor course, summoned forth by holy light and sensual warmth; Gift of life and morning dew, arise.

In human sorrow. In desperate chante. In canticles of fragile joy. In what is known or not, visit these earth bound souls of need and want.

For we shall yet live again in multum aperio. Oh Bless-ed Sun with healing wings awake... awake at last!

The Shamrock: A Glimpse into Divine Mystery ~ by Patrick J Zuniga

“Is this one leaf, or three? If one leaf, then why are there three lobes of equal size? If three leaves, then why is there just one stem? If you cannot explain so simple a mystery as the shamrock, how can you hope to understand one so profound as the Holy Trinity?” ~St Patrick

So, as legend goes, Ireland’s patron saint answered his audience after being asked to explain the mystery of the Trinity. Biblical scholars ever since have taken the shamrock apart theologically, philosophically, historically, mathematically, and biologically. Whatever happened to K.I.S.S – Keep It Simple Sonny. Whether or not St. Patrick actually taught his students Trinitarian doctrine using a shamrock as a metaphor is debatable. He never mentions the event in his own writings (those which have been preserved), although it is plausible that he did; for such a practice fits What Jesus Would Do by creatively composing naturalistic parables as a visual method to shed light on kingdom truths.

St. Patrick – as Our Lord often did – most likely appropriated available means at the moment in an attempt to give insight into a complex teaching. His students were required to have a measure of faith. Although the exercise of faith is nothing less than intellectual suicide for those who put complete stock in their reasoning faculties alone, i.e., rejecting all religious/spiritual propositions not sanctioned by science, i.e., despising anything alien to man’s cognitive ken.

Christianity’s Master a few centuries before Patrick made it clear to his disciples (and us), “I still have many things to say unto you, but you cannot hear them now.” Their minds and souls were not yet developed in the way of higher assimilation so as to absorb divine mysteries. Trusting Him was for them, as it is for us, a necessary virtue. In the words of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophies.”

A variety of illustrations have been set forth over the past two thousand years in an effort to depict the Trinity: H2O in it’s three elemental stages; the egg; the tri-part existence of man – soul, spirit, flesh; and many others. Yet, some of these props are completely faulty; while others fall short in fully describing the 3-in-1 mystery of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Trinitarian theology has been attacked and criticized by dissenting factions long before the Irish apostle ever preached his first sermon. Because it doesn’t fit ‘traditional’ monotheistic concepts; and because the term Trinity is not mentioned in the bible. Roman Catholicism, Constantine, neo-platonism, manuscript canon, and controversies surrounding the Tetragrammaton (Jewish application of God’s Holy Name and Title) also come into the controversy – most of which will not be answered in this article, but apologetic resources addressing these relevant topics are provided at the end. Non-trinitarians will often quote scriptural verses which at first glance lend credence to their position. Trinitarians will counter with passages that uphold a Triune God.

What is important about the Trinity? Does it really matter? Venerable Church Fathers say yes, for it clearly affirms the pre-incarnate Divinity of Christ, the Cornerstone of Christian salvation.

A Three Person Godhead has solid exegetical support from both Old and New Testament scripture. Unitarians and non-Christian monotheistic religions dispute any and all such exegeses. Nevertheless, Nicaea’s 325 AD council resolved the ‘Trinity’ controversy by primarily basing their conclusion on the teachings of Jesus as he referred to a very personal Triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. While the word itself, although biblically absent (like rapture) is universally recognized.

That platonism influenced Church Fathers with triad-god ideas is a clumsy polemic, and mere opinion rather than provable fact. Pagan philosophies have always shadowed biblical doctrine and dramatic events. Furthermore, Plato’s god was a lower deistic entity or Demiurge which intermingled with physical matter; not anything like the Almighty God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. ‘Early’ Church Fathers were inspired by Scripture and the Holy Spirit in their development of doctrine, not Greek myths. Linguistically they translated from Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, applying proper philological constructions, not subtle Greek etymological preferences in order to fulfill an ideological agenda.

Even the laws of physics are occasionally postulated against a Triune God by non-trinitarians. Yet, when God the Son did a miracle – viz, multiply the fish and loaves – He clearly transcended human scientific rationale and our limited epistemological grasp of physics. Perhaps He merely applied cosmic laws in Omnipotent/Omniscient ways far above our feeble comprehension. To wit:

In Quantum physics specialists propose that there can be as many as eleven or more operational dimensions compacted within subatomic particles (unlike the four dimensional universe our senses normally observe). String Theory, which is intricately associated with quantum mechanics, sometimes called “The Theory of Everything,” is a world of cryptic subatomic particle behavior, a widely accepted phenomena among theoretical physicists. In plain language, string theory researchers have been discovering micro-entities and anomalies so mind boggling that theoreticians are just beginning to realize how awesome, mysterious, and contradicting our universe actually functions. Unusual physics’ principles outside the reach of Einstein‘s genius roam within those hidden dimensions. And these probing experiments only pertain to the physical realm. What happens when we peer into the metaphysical? spiritual? or eternal?

In view of these inexplicable marvels, is the One = Three = One Trinity not possible, regardless of how perplexing to man’s puny four dimensional perceptions of reality? And how do we fathom the ‘Omnipresence’ of GOD?

“For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits Eternity…”  – Isaiah 57:15

Let’s picture going back in time with a laptop. We are assigned the task of explaining this puzzling device to a community of serfs in 12th century England and how it works in the 21st century. We turn it on, upload pictures, music, numerous apps, and reveal to these astonished listeners other hi-tech wonders of a modern era hundreds of years ahead. After concluding our crystal clear presentation the awe struck peasants agree to talk it over. They discuss our little demo in the norms of Middle-Age conversation. Finally, shrugging their shoulders and shaking their heads most of them decide it is much easier to simply dismiss our existence rather than mentally embrace what they just heard and saw. People react in similar ways when confronted with scriptural doctrines that require faith, viz,The Trinity; The Atonement… – “It is too hard to receive. It doesn’t make sense.” So they get dismissed, rationalized away.

Patrick encouraged his pupils to accept life’s veracity of more things in heaven and earth existing than man is capable of calculating by reason alone. Whether it was him or others who employed a shamrock to symbolize God’s Holy Trinity is still being discussed among scholars. Those students – like our 12th c. peasants – had to be patient and trust that what they heard is quite possibly real, regardless of how difficult to conceptually envision.

Mankind should always be humble and learn the art of waiting and listening. Whatever is made known by trustworthy writings, masters, and teachers, anything greater than his shallow awareness of science and nature, could simply be a transcending reality.

The shamrock today has a high market value for merchants who trade in Irish goods. For believers who are willing to apply a little faith it represents an even greater spiritual value. One that keeps on giving beyond March 17.

“Go, therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit…” Matthew 28:19

I arise today… Christ to be my shield today.
Against poison, against burning,
Against drowning, against wounding…

So that there may come to me abundance of reward…

Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ when I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me…

I arise today…
Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,
Through belief in the threeness, Through confession of the oneness, Of the Creator of Creation.

~ By Patrick J Zuniga

Einstein convincingly postulated, by reason of his advanced mathematical theories, that time is not as we think. We are extremely inept in understanding our universe and how it fully works by reason of this X factor alone. For example: scientific evaluations and/or posits which determine celestial/terrestrial age heavily depend on time relevant principles and measuring tools like carbon dating, stellar red shifts, applied mathematics, etc. Yet, by Einstein’s estimation, and other esteem physicists, the past, present, and future exist simultaneously, and time as we view it is merely an illusion. Therefore, any accurate theory for something which has been labeled as very, very, old is not the ‘illusion’ of millions and millions of ‘years’ ago, but rather the reality of millions and millions of ‘processes’ or what Feynman preferred calling ‘direction[s].’ And these processes – or directions – are not effectively construed by a technician’s current time measuring techniques. All kinds of alteration Phenomena (gravitational effects on time) are constantly influencing temporal attributes. Meaning what? A ‘billion years’ could literally be several thousands of lineal years which have undergone billions of time/particle processes, erroneously interpreted as billions of lineal years. Or, another way of putting it: Man’s infantile concept of what time really is and his exercise in futility when he solely measures it by, and comprehends it within, a 3-dimensional-clock paradigm.

And as for the future, well, it is here and now; constantly co-manifesting with the past and present. Past, present, and future, ever changing – or perhaps in some respects never changing at all – yet, all snug and existing together. A cosmic enigma which puny man does not have the capacity to comprehend. But there is One who does.

Quantum physics specialists are increasingly stumped by a torrent of interesting paradoxes and mysteries newly uncovered in the field of sub-particle behavior. Scientific communities have been hit with a fairly recent discovered fact (headache). The speed of light is not the stable yardstick they once believed it to be. Advanced methodical experimentation has uncovered a slowing down of light’s velocity. Which means at one point in existence it was much faster. What does this revelation bode for the integrity of 21st century scientific evaluations and conclusions on cosmological and terrestrial age, especially when these sketchy evaluations, coupled with inadequate instrumentation, ill affected by innumerable and uncertain cosmic forces, are used as a gauge for primordial chronology?

Indisputably then, modern 3 dimensional human scientific investigations have inherent impediments; inasmuch as such investigations fall short of comprehending multiple dimensional space/time and sub-particle anomalies. It’s the ageless conundrum of trying to pull oneself up by one’s bootstraps. And the very reason why mankind needs outside revelation before he can fully comprehend origins or his own existence, i.e, outside of scientific methodology.

Good! It’s about time. Mortal intellect must wake up and stop playing god with its feeble scientific conjectures and learn the art of listening to his Maker. Mankind, if not careful, can be caught in a vortex of academic vanity. All he ever can do then is learn, learn, learn, in a never ending frustration of how little, little, little, he knows. And what he does sorta know is meaningless without a meaningful beginning and fulfilling end. Copyright: patrick J Zuniga 5/16

Salvation in the Age of Mega-Prosperity: by Patrick J Zuniga

Targeted preachers on TV get pummeled with a constant barrage of searing criticism for preaching a prosperity message, and for alleged personal failings. There is legitimate concern here when teachings on the primary concept of Our Lord’s coming are marginalized and/or moral integrity is wanting. Too many of these critics, however, simply spew out envy or sport a blind self righteousness. In spite of all the well meaning or nasty rebuking going on, prosperity preachers are not all equal, i.e., some are not as bad as their accusers opine, or as bad as their accusers. Some possess gifts of encouragement* while others manipulate donors for monetary gifts. We ought not be too quick to judge though, or get caught up in group think. An all wise God will discriminately use and remove whom He will in fulfilling the excellency of His purpose. Don’t matter what we do.

Mega-churches flourish throughout Christendom and are ever promoting popular themes of a Christ centered prosperous life. That can be good, or possibly bad. It all depends on who is doing the promoting and why. But what is very good is that they knowingly or unknowingly serve a God of Love in the salvation of many souls. All of this is indisputable. Oh the wisdom and unsearchable goodness of Sovereign grace poured out upon every generation. Once again, Eternal God – without our permission – does as He pleases in heaven and earth; using, correcting, removing, abasing, exalting whomsoever He will!

So then, how should those who express an earnest solicitude about preserving a pure gospel in the midst of an ever diluting ‘prosperity gospel’ answer these things? Reproving one another when reproofs are warranted – in the spirit of love and grace  – is a necessary admonishment. Condemning is not; and never will be in the court of our judicious King. May the wisdom and peace of Christ be our guide.

On the universal topic of prosperity, as we study the scriptures with humility, casting all smug theological preconceptions aside, we find that the greatest preachers of all time on this lightning rod subject were Jesus, David, and Solomon. Throughout both Old and New Testaments enrichment in this world is a major positive theme when gained with God’s blessing. Now we know there are bible verses which warn against THE COVETING OF immense wealth or its abuse; but NOT THE having and enjoying such wealth through God given means, while firmly keeping eternity vs. the material in proper perspective. Basically a man living in a hut can be of a wrong heart where riches are a covetous concern and a man living in a palace very pure in heart where riches are a living reality. Holy Writ makes it very clear that It has to do with one’s heart, not status.

Luke 18: 29-30  KJV

And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or parents, or brethren, or wife, or children, for the kingdom of God’s sake, who shall not receive many times more in this present time, and in the age to come eternal life.

Luke 6:38  KJV

Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom

Psalms 112: 2-3   KJV

Their children will be mighty in the land the generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth and riches are in their houses and their righteousness endures forever.

Psalm 122:7    KJV

“May peace be within your walls, and prosperity within your palaces.

Proverbs 8: 17-18  KJV

I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently find me. Riches and honor are with me, enduring wealth and righteousness.

Proverbs 3: 15-16   KJV

She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand, and in her left hand are riches and honor.

And we could reference Deuteronomy 28: 1-14 and Isaiah 60 along with numerous scripture verses which have to do with God’s desire to pour out health and wealth blessings upon His people; upon those who trust in Him and keep His ways.

Regardless of our natural condition, as Christians, we are reminded by scripture that blessed fellowship with each other, rejoicing in the Holy Spirit, and cleaving to a close communion with the crucified/resurrected Savior are of paramount importance in how we live our lives here on earth — much, much, more so than material gain; and certainly much more so than possessing a censoring attitude toward anyone who dares not see discipleship or the expounding of biblical truths as we do.

 Patrick J Zuniga 12/2020

* Caveat Emptor. As true believers we are required to exercise Holy Spirit discernment:. All TV preachers are not equal; nor do they all stand in the same fleecing pulpit, or sit in the same seat of scoffers. Notwithstanding their detractors or shortcomings, whether we like any particular ones or not which bear the stigma of a prosperity label, some prove to be very gifted speakers and have been instrumental in the Hand of God. Their ministerial focus is on the promises of God; promises which have been ordained for our highest wellbeing. Yet, in addition to a ministry of encouraging faith they directly and indirectly lead many into a saving knowledge of Christ. And for being used so will be greatly blessed for it. Do  mega-church leaders need God’s correcting Hand once in a while? Of course, just like you and me. His Mercy and Grace? Without question, just like… you and me.

Killing Jesus, by Bill Oreilly and Martin Dugard: Another Worldly Book That Falls Completely Short of the ETERNAL BOOK

images

“I’m writing a book, ‘Killing Jesus,’ about why Jesus of Nazareth was executed. It’s a history book. But obviously, the Gospels that discuss this were involved with that. But there are some contradictions among Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. And then it’s MY JOB and Martin Dugard, my co-author, to cut through the contradictions and to try to give a narrative of what actually happened to Jesus, because he was executed.”    ~ O’Reilly interview with Roma Downey.

In contrast to the above statement, manuscript scholars overwhelmingly concur that constantly cited contradictions in the four gospels are merely differing perspectives from primary witnesses, minor grammatical translation misapplications from original language dialects into modern languages, or improper interpretations by the critic. (1) That is why so many churches in their declarations of biblical faith use the explicit definition – “in their original writings”- when testifying to the inerrancy of scripture. Furthermore, most manuscript experts agree that indicted variants used as a polemic against the word of God, comparative with the whole textual volume, are few and insignificant, and DO NOT sufficiently alter the integrity of any specific incident; DO NOT disqualify the incident as a factual historical event; DO NOT prove holy writ as false and unreliable  (i.e., does not destroy the integrity of Holy Writ as God Breathed. Variants, in God’s working and time, will be addressed, for He preserves His Word. Psalm 12:7) Human languages and manuscript transmissions into modern languages can be investigated; but scripture –  violently tested throughout the ages – cannot be broken or proven false. John 10:35   Psalm 12:7.

Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard do not possess any scholarship qualifications in the field of higher-lower criticism and related disciplines to academically address alleged biblical contradictions. And in the place of diligent application, personal opinion and selective editing are implemented; ‘cutting through’ what gifted and highly trained New Testament manuscript specialists have already bequeathed to generations. Other KJ contributors either lack the necessary credentials as well, or their transcription analysis has not been shared.

Since the Factor host has unequivocally expressed his views interpreting miraculous episodes chronicled in biblical history as allegorical, it should come as no surprise that he obviously cherry picks Holy Scripture when writing a novel about the most important figure recorded therein. In sharp rebuke against such a mindset, from Genesis through Revelation, scriptures are a vivid autobiography of the Transcendent God, Creator, Savior. Take away, or allegorize, portions in it which puny man decides are scientifically unsound, even for an Omnipotent God, viz, Noah and the flood; the Exodus plagues; parting of the Red Sea; wilderness wanderings of Israel; Joshua’s campaigns; Jonah; Elijah’s powerful ministry; the miracles of Christ and the apostles…, then we are left with a scanty butchered document advertising an impotent savior.

Killing Jesus betrays a heavy percentage of creative gap fillers in order to embellish its entertainment appeal. Novels like this formally come under the genre of historical fiction in spite of voluminous footnotes submitted. Two things people should keep in mind. Did the Holy Spirit inspire Bill O’reilly in this work as he claims?  (i.e.) Did Eternal God in the Person of the Holy Spirit, Who did inspire the gospels through the pen of four apostles, direct a news journalist two thousand years later, without critical manuscript skills, to set right what those apostles got wrong in the original scrolls? Second, Bill O’reilly and Martin Dugard are not giving ordinary folks a fresh historic insight, as O’Reilly boasts in his Note to Readers. Professorial reader-friendly treatises and publications which collaborate the gospel stories from a non-religious perspective, utilizing 1st century historians like Josephus and Tacitus, et al, have already been published. (2) The difference is that these works usually vindicate Judeo-Christian canon as distinctive and authoritative. (3) With O’Reilly, by his own stated convictions, Killing Jesus is submersed in the attitude that biblical canon is not always trustworthy; ergo a copious injection of secular histories scouring a timeline from Julius Caesar well passed Constantine. Neither does the narrative shed new light on contemporary motives which brought about the demise of Jesus. Nor does it expose the age old “lethal struggle’” between good and evil more so than other writings.   Pg 4 KJ

These men merely did a Jesus of Nazareth historical work (as many have already done), employing a vast amount of archived material. I don’t think it would be too blasphemous to suggest that the Holy Spirit was probably not involved. Not because the Holy Spirit disdains intellectual input, or despises a composition resonating with an ivy league level of knowledge and methodology, but because the work displays an ambitious use of that knowledge and methodology in a manner which intentionally bypasses the heart message of Christianity, i.e., The Holy Spirit will not inspire a lettered theme: Jesus, the great teacher killed because he threatened the rich and powerful; and then dismiss Jesus, Lord and Savior who died for the sins of the world. A pure gospel theme is extremely important. God is not interested in men declaring, “look what we know.” Men know nothing, no matter how much we think we know. Paul the apostle counted all mortal knowledge he learned as rubbish comparative with the excellency of personally knowing Christ crucified – resurrected!

I’m sure Bill and Martin were excited about publishing a bestseller that would validate the far reaching influence of Jesus as a great moral teacher, thereby encouraging skeptics in the way of his example. But the world needs more than great philosophers or teachers, back then or today. If that is all he was then our faith, as Paul the apostle said “is in vain,” and the life and death of Jesus a miserable tragedy. What the world has always needed is a Savior. A Divine Savior. A miraculous Savior. A Savior which takes away sin. Our Lord’s humanity is important, but much more so His God nature as revealed throughout inerrant scripture.

Readers of Killing Jesus may glean from it what they will, but they should do so with the indisputable caveat that it is not a sacred book or a canonized text. It is just another highly intellectualized viewpoint on Jesus, dramatized in a Hollywood style script.

Scripture will always be superior vis-à-vis any writing or research when it comes to illuminating the life, death, resurrection, and Divinity of Jesus. In other words, go ahead and read colorful flesh and blood sourced biographies, profiling planet earth’s most unique human being. Read Josephus, Tacitus, and Pliny, etc., but also pick up a bible and cut through all the intentional, misguided, didactic viewpoints of skeptical modern pundits. Know the real Jesus story (eem – unu – El / God with us) through eyewitness apostles, who truly were inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Three samples of Killing Jesus speculated dates (and times of day) presented as though precise historical facts:

March 23, AD 7 Afternoon.    Jesus as a boy in the temple: There are no records available to justify this date, and certainly not the time of day. It is pure fiction     pg 70

AD 26 Midday.    John the Baptist disputes with the pharisees along the Jordan: This date is not confirmed by secular or canonical history.    pg 95

AD 30 April 2 Sunday   The day Jesus enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey: Historians have not nailed down the exact year of his triumphant Jerusalem entry. Circa AD, followed by differing dates (depending on source), is all that is given by scholars.  Pg 181

Interview with Roma Downey: on contradictions. And Bill contradicting himself

O’Reilly to Roma Downey: “But there are some contradictions among Matthew, Mark, Luke and John…“

Quote from Killing Jesus: “Many today challenge these writings (the four gospels), but thanks to scholarship and archaeology, there is growing acceptance of their overall historicity and authenticity.”  pg    *This cannot be without alleged contradictions being properly resolved in a spiritual, theological, scholarly, and God centered commitment to truthfulness.

Interview with Norah O’Donnell:  “Right” – picking and choosing

Norah O’Donnell: “But you use as your sources for this book the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. But you pick and choose.”

Bill O’Reilly: “Right, but that’s not our only source. I mean, we use Muslim sources, we use Roman sources, we use Jewish sources.”

* Muslim scribes were not available in BC 5 – AD 32. And mullahs 600 years later cannot be considered reliable proponents on investigating the true historical Jesus and his life.

Unrealistic boast of the Book’s Importance and the Author’s Competence or Even Right ‘to cut through’ Scripture:

“But the incredible story behind the lethal struggle between good and evil has not been fully told. UNTIL NOW.  At least that is the goal of this book”    pg 4 KJ

“…And then it’s MY JOB and Martin Dugard, my co-author, to cut through the contradictions (of Scripture) and to try to give a narrative of what actually happened to Jesus, “        ~ Interview with Roma Downey

*Note: Bill O’Reilly is learning from life like the rest of us. He needs God’s grace and mercy and correction like the rest of us. He has a long standing reputation as an aggressive, investigative, news program host. But if he actually wants people to believe that he is being inspired by the Holy Spirit, then a wee bit more humility and much prayer and fasting is a traditional prerequisite (fervent prayer and fasting!). Couple that with certified master degrees in ancient manuscript languages, theology, hermeneutics, and Judeo-Christian history, then it will be highly interesting to hear what he has to say on the topic of biblical veracity.

Promises to Keep… And Miles to go Before I Sleep…

gty-trump-oath-crowd-jef-170120_12x5_1600

Promises are sacred – except in Washington. A common proverb says, ‘a promise is only as good as the Promiser’s power and willingness to deliver.’ Too many DC politicians have passed through congressional halls, and the oval office, bearing promissory notes vouchsafed for the American people, only to leave with those very notes unfulfilled. Their fault? Such men and women may have given their all yet failed, or merely said what was necessary to get elected. History and analysis will render its own judgment. One thing is true. When a set of promises are good for any given nation, then the whole nation must do its part, together with their respective prime minister or president, if those promises are ever to become a reality. It’s called unity of national purpose.

Few leaders throughout history have successfully rallied their constituency, for better or worse, to wholeheartedly assist in the accomplishment of a given set of goals. It really all depends on the nature of the declared promises, and how constituents feel about those promises – and the Promiser.

What of President Trump’s vowed pledges and potential to deliver? Here are eight executive commitments contained in his inaugural address.

Promise 1: Drain the Swamp.

“The establishment (DC) protected itself, but not the citizens of our country. Their victories have not been your victories; their triumphs have not been your triumphs; and while they celebrated in our nation’s capital, there was little to celebrate for struggling families all across our land. That all changes — starting right here, and right now, because this moment is your moment: it belongs to you.”

“We will no longer accept politicians who are all talk and no action — constantly complaining but never doing anything about it.”

Promise 2: Eradicate Radical Islam.

“We will reinforce old alliances and form new ones — and unite the civilized world against radical Islamic terrorism, which we will eradicate completely from the face of the earth.”

Promise 3: Protect America’s Interests, economic and otherwise.

“We assembled here today are issuing a new decree to be heard in every city, in every foreign capital, and in every hall of power. From this day forward, a new vision will govern our land. From this day forward, it’s going to be only America first…”

Promise 4: Secure the Borders and our citizens

“We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.”

Promise 5: Strengthen the military

“For many decades, we’ve enriched foreign industry at the expense of American industry… [S]ubsidized the armies of other countries while allowing for the very sad depletion of our military…  But that is the past. And now we are looking only to the future.”

Promise 6: Strengthen Alliances with Allies and Good Will with World Nations

“We will seek friendship and goodwill with the nations of the world, but we do so with the understanding that it is the right of all nations to put their own interests first. We do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone, but rather to let it shine as an example. We will shine for everyone to follow.”

Promise 7: Advancement in Science and Space

“We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries, and technologies of tomorrow.”

Promise 8: Transfer power from Washington back to the people.

“We are transferring power from Washington DC, and giving it back to the people.”

“What truly matters is not which party controls our government, but whether our government is controlled by the people.”

                                                             Full Address Here

These are impressive promises. And promises that – for the sake of our country’s well-being – truly do need at least some measure of fulfillment. But what of Trump’s ability to come through, and more importantly his prowess to get undecided Americans on-board.

On top of overcoming massive opposition from a hostile media, defying a powerful Washington establishment, and enduring numerous insults slung by protesters, there is an A+ ‘get it done’ rating in President Trump’s Character which an anti-Trump press would not effectively cover to his credit. As a matter of historical record (now), most major news centers deliberately chose a negative slant while covering the new president’s inauguration; cherry picking detailed criticisms, and fault finding, as the entire event unfolded. Unprofessional news outlets even suggested a contemptible Hitlerian undertone in President Trump’s address. Unbelievable! Exactly the opposite how the MSM press treated his predecessor!

As for a so called lack of poetic cadence, philosophical inspiration, and hope in his maiden address, it was all there – the poetry, philosophy, and hope. Apparently some people decided not to hear it, or simply read into the clarion call their own hate interpretations. What was lacking was excessive pretty paragraphs and useless double talk. But most Americans don’t even care either way. We’ve heard enough ribbon wrapped speeches, laced with honey words and phrases. A straightforward “This is what’s going on, and this is what we’re going to do” was NOT DREARY, but rather honest and refreshing. The best poetry! Of course mistress media, aka, the usual suspects, chose a doom and gloom spin.

Donald Trump, in spite of past occasional failures or misbehavior, has a reputation for being a hard working accomplished businessman. A combination of patriotism and a ‘can do’ perseverance has sent a signal of confidence that he will do everything in his power to fulfill his sacred pledge. That is why so many Americans voted for him, including this one.

The 45th president promised action on day one concerning the Affordable Care Act and regulatory relief – promised kept. He promised a restoration of American jobs, businesses, and factories – this promise is showing promise. And there are over 1400 more days wherein he can work on the rest. Without question, for our national good fortune, everyone of us should join him in this quest. Countering him when necessary (i.e., reminding him of a prime promise – return power back to We The People), and helping him in every way possible. And without fail attacks and challenges will come; from many enemies they will come. These must be met and won by answerable courage.

What about those personal transparencies he has yet to show forth? Like tax returns and business disclosures? That’s important, and it’s on him; but most likely a majority of Americans will not give a flip after he successfully delivers on the important national promises for security, prosperity, and justice – as decreed on January 20, 2017.                                                                                     ©  Patrick J Zuniga 1/22/17
